When it was first built upon, Wellington Hill was a middle-class, Protestant Republican enclave advertised as a "clerical" rather than "executive" area. Over the course of the 1910s and 1920s, a gradual ethnic transition to a Jewish neighborhood took place. Some scholars have argued that the Jewish community at Wellington Hill was stable until 1968, whereupon it was invaded by real-estate agents who used intimidation methods to make quick profits, ushering Jewish families out and African American families in. Shortly after, many of these Victorian homes were burnt down or abandoned when repairs were needed and replaced with empty lots. This neighborhood is reminiscent of some areas of Detriot, which likewise has been left rather stricken. Wellington Hill is the highest point in the neighborhood of Mattapan. The Solomon Lewenberg School lies at the crest of the hill. It is also has the highest median income amongst all other communities in the area. Lawns and gardens are often meticulously cared for. Wellington Footway, a path with ornate lighting fixtures that connects two parts of the neighborhood, extends off of Wellington Hill Road. Wellington Hill also has the highest percentage of owner controlled housing in the neighborhood. Currently, three Baptist churches and significant vacant land dominate Blue Hill Avenue along Wellington Hill. The Morning Star Baptist Church is a large and vital part of Wellington Hill's community.
